Running drama sessions in your school

Many schools are used to the services of the peripatetic music teachers, offering instrumental tuition in schools that supplements curriculum learning, but few have diversified into the field of the dramatic (spoken) arts.

Drama is frequently recognised as a means of teaching other curriculum subjects; techniques such as Thought Tunnels and Hot-Seating can often be seen applied to subjects as varied and fundamental as Maths, English and Science.  Few schools, however, are yet to experience firsthand the benefits that a Drama Support team can offer to both students and the school environment.

Benefits for the student

Studying, and participating in, peforming arts activities provides an incredibly useful outlet for young people to express themselves in a safe and healthy environment.  The performing arts encourages concentration and dedication, and provides young people with useful life skills such as the ability to speak fluently and confidently in public situations, such as job interviews and presentations.  Many schools note a marked improvement in children's participation and cooperation, following their undertaking a drama education.  As well as oracy and literacy skills, drama teaches how to be a team player and how to work towards common goals.

Benefits for you

It is widely agreed that performing arts tuition benefits not only the child but also the wider school community.  Drama can make a significant impact on all areas of a school’s curriculum, and enrich the lives of both students and teachers alike by improving cooperation and communication skills inside and outside the classroom. It can also contribute to the positive image of the school.

There are further ways that the Drama Service can provide benefits for you, the school:

1) Children's University

'The Children's University is a national organisation that provides 7 to 14 year olds with exciting and innovative learning activities and experiences outside normal school hours'.  As an organisation, they award children's involvement in extra-curricular activities with certificates, and promote that learning is beneficial for holistic development and advancement in life.

Many schools assist their students in registering for the Children's University, and help them collect valuable University 'hours', which are tallied against their University achievement.  The culmination of the initiative is the chance to graduate!
Visit www.childrensuniversity.co.uk for more information.

2) Artsmark

The Artsmark currently only exists in England although various branches of the award are being trialled in Wales.  The Artsmark operates as an outside auditor, ensuring that schools offer the best possible performing-arts opportunities for their pupils.  Activities such as peripatetic drama tuition, when offered to a school as a whole, can contribute to the granting of this sought-after award.
